Professional auto racing has arrived in New York City. The Formula E Series, held in Red Hook Brooklyn last July, was a big success. The event has inspired enthusiasm among residents of the metropolitan area for the sport. Set against the backdrop of Lower Manhattan and Lady Liberty in the harbor, New York City has become one of the premier event locations in the new pro-electric car racing circuit.
Imitation is the highest form of flattery, and so I’ve decided to try my driving skills on the race track. Not as a participant in the next Formula E event, but rather a good few levels down. Today’s day trip will be to RPM Raceway in Jersey City, New Jersey.
RPM Raceway is a business which has been around for a few years. They recently changed their name to RPM from Pole Position Raceway. They have six locations, three of which are in the New York metropolitan area. Besides Jersey City, the other two locations are Stamford, Connecticut, and Farmingdale on Long Island. I chose the Jersey City location due to its proximity to Manhattan. However, I’ve read that they are pretty much all the same since the name change.
RPM Raceway features all-electric, indoor go-karts. These racing vehicles manufactured in Italy, are capable of speeds of up to 45 mph. Powered by electricity, there is no exhaust. You will also notice that these go-karts are relatively quiet. They produce a buzzing sound only when you press down on the accelerator pedal.
RPM’s management is keen. The operation is well kept and organized. The substantial indoor racetrack remains heated during the winter and airconditioned in the summer. The staff stays on top of all activity on the track to ensure safety for everyone at the facility. They have strict rules and adhere to them.
There are a variety of packages available. Lots of patrons come as part of larger groups, and there are also couples out on a fun date. The entry fee begins at $20 per race. RPM provides a racing helmet and a head sock. All patrons are required to sign a waiver, for insurance purposes.
While waiting to get on the track, there is an arcade. You can play billiards on the pool table, and there is even a high-tech racing car simulator like the kind used by racing pros to prepare for a race. You won’t be bored.
As for food, snacks are available. You can buy pizza, pretzels, popcorn, chips, and soft drinks but plan on eating elsewhere if you are interested in a full meal.
So close to the city, and easy to reach by car or public transit, RPM Raceway in Jersey City is a fun getaway. It is a relaxing, yet competitive way to spend a few hours of quality time together with friends or that special someone in your life. Relationships are all about time spent, and day trips are the perfect time to bond.
