Day trips are all about taking time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. They also are an opportunity to bond with the special people in our lives. There is no more perfect activity you could partake in to accomplish both of these at the same time than a day fishing. Furthermore, you are fortunate if you live in metro New York where fishing is a natural resource which exists in abundance.
As you travel around the city, you will notice licensed anglers are out everywhere fishing these days. They are along the banks of the Hudson, Harlem, and East Rivers. The New York State Department of Health has designated these waterways as safe to fish. That is because they are tidal waters. The enactment of environmentally protective policies over the past several decades has resulted in the cleaner water around New York City. None the less I don’t recommend eating your catch from these waterways. There is a much safer option just offshore.
Which brings us to today's recommended day trip, a fishing excursion out on the Atlantic Ocean a few miles from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. The fish out there are much healthier for human consumption. Schools of blackfish, porgies, sea bass and flounder abound just offshore. Not to mention, you will be boarding Captain Jeff’s fully licensed vessel, the Admiral Midnight, so you don’t need to bring anything but appropriate clothing and perhaps a snack.
Captain Jeff is an experienced skipper, and Admiral Midnight is just one of several vessels of the Midnight Fleet. The skipper and his mates are experts at navigating the waters off the shores of New York City. Passengers are provided with fishing rods and reels and instructed on how to use them when needed.
The Admiral Midnight is my favorite fishing vessel out of Sheepshead Bay because the crew is so easy going and friendly. The boat sails twice a day, weather permitting, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and again 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. The fishing trips aboard the Admiral Midnight are suitable for the seasoned angler as well as the rank beginner.
A day out on the ocean with Captin Jeff is the cheapest one day vacation New Yorkers can take. Away from the hustle and bustle, yet the Manhattan skyline remains within view several miles off in the distance. Fishing is a natural high. If you haven’t taken a fishing cruise from Sheepshead Bay, I put it high up on my list of day trips you must consider. You may even return home with a bonus - dinner for a week.
